About The Waterboys

The Waterboys, formed in London in the early 1980s by Scottish singer-songwriter Mike Scott, have become a singular force in blending literate rock with Celtic folk traditions. Emerging from Scott’s post-punk background, the band quickly gained attention with their self-titled debut (1983), but it was the sweeping, anthem-like “Big Music” of *This Is the Sea* (1985) that propelled them to wider acclaim, largely thanks to the enduring hit “The Whole of the Moon.” This era featured key collaborators like keyboardist Karl Wallinger and trumpeter Roddy Lorimer, whose contributions enriched the band’s cinematic sound.

Following Wallinger’s departure, Scott relocated to Dublin, initiating a deep immersion into Irish folk that reshaped The Waterboys’ identity. Alongside longtime fiddler Steve Wickham—who became a defining presence—the band embraced traditional Celtic instrumentation on *Fisherman’s Blues* (1988) and *Room to Roam* (1990), a period often dubbed the “Raggle Taggle Band” phase. Accordionist Sharon Shannon also lent her talents, adding vibrant folk textures.

Throughout their near four-decade journey, The Waterboys have continually evolved. After experimenting with harder rock on *Dream Harder* (1993), Scott explored solo projects before reviving the band in 2000 with the exploratory *Rock in the Weary Land*. They continued to blend genres—from the spiritual folk of *Universal Hall* (2003) and the poetic fusion of *An Appointment with Mr. Yeats* (2011), which set W.B. Yeats’ poetry to music, to the genre-defying *Modern Blues* (2015) and the eclectic double album *Out of All This Blue* (2017). Their latest offering, *All Souls Hill* (2022), embraces electronic beats and hip-hop influences, underscoring The Waterboys’ restless innovation while remaining rooted in their folk-rock foundation. With a revolving lineup anchored by Scott and Wickham, the band remains an enduring and evolving presence in contemporary music.
