About Los Straitjackets

Los Straitjackets are a pioneering instrumental rock band formed in Nashville in 1988 by guitarists Eddie Angel and Danny Amis. After a brief initial run, they reemerged in 1994, adopting their iconic look with Mexican wrestling masks—a distinctive nod to Lucha Libre culture that complements their signature surf-rock sound. Drawing heavily from instrumental legends like The Ventures, Duane Eddy, and Dick Dale, Los Straitjackets have crafted a unique blend of twangy, reverb-soaked guitars paired with tight rhythm sections and playful stage theatrics.

Their expansive discography highlights their versatility, with thematic albums such as the holiday-themed "’Tis the Season for Los Straitjackets" (2002), the swinging ’60s-inspired "Twist Party!!!" (2006), and the Latin-infused "Rock en Español, Vol. 1" (2007). Though primarily instrumental, the band has collaborated with acclaimed vocalists including Nick Lowe, Raul Malo, and Deke Dickerson, producing notable projects like "Sing Along with Los Straitjackets" (2001) and a 2014 album featuring Dickerson’s vocals. Their partnership with blues legend Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater on "Rock ’n’ Roll City" (2003) earned them a Grammy nomination, underscoring their impact beyond surf rock circles.

With lineup expansions and continued creativity, Los Straitjackets released inventive works like "Jet Set" (2012), the zombie-themed "Mondo Zombie Boogaloo" (2013), and the politically tinged "What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Los Straitjackets" (2017). Their 2019 EP "Channel Surfing" showcased quirky adaptations of classic TV themes, while the 2024 album "Indoor Safari" reunited them with Nick Lowe, blending fresh and archival material. Renowned for their distinctive masked appearance and energetic performances, Los Straitjackets remain influential fixtures in instrumental and roots rock, celebrated for their enduring blend of retro surf nostalgia and dynamic musicianship.
