About The Drones

The Drones, an influential Australian rock band, originated in Perth in 2000 when guitarist and vocalist Gareth Liddiard joined forces with guitarist Rui Pereira, formerly of the Gutterville Splendour Six. Frustrated by Perth’s limited music scene, they relocated first to Sydney and eventually settled in Melbourne. There, drummer Chris Strybosch, previously with the Stunt Car Drivers, and bassist Fiona Kitchin completed the lineup. The band’s sound is a fierce fusion of raw blues and trash rock, propelled by Liddiard’s intense and distinctive vocals.

After self-releasing an EP, The Drones caught the attention of Spooky Records, releasing their debut album "Here Come the Lies" (2002). Their breakthrough came with "Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By" (2005), which secured international acclaim through All Tomorrow’s Parties and expanded their audience significantly. The lineup evolved with drummer Mike Noga replacing Strybosch during this period; Noga’s untimely passing in 2020 was a profound loss for the band.

Subsequent albums like "Gala Mill" (2006)—nominated for the Australian Music Prize—"Havilah" (2008), "I See Seaweed" (2013), which earned a J Award nomination, and "Feelin Kind of Free" (2016) showcase The Drones’ restless creativity and evolving sound. Known for passionate live performances and relentless touring, The Drones have cemented their status as a vital and enduring force in Australian rock music.
