About Patti Smith

Patti Smith, born December 30, 1946, in Chicago and raised in New Jersey, stands as a pioneering figure in the fusion of poetry and punk rock. Deeply influenced by Beat poets like Arthur Rimbaud, as well as musicians such as Bob Dylan, James Brown, and The Rolling Stones, Smith moved to New York City in 1967. There, she immersed herself in the city’s vibrant artistic scene, forging close ties with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and playwright Sam Shepard while living at the Chelsea Hotel.

Launching her musical career in the early 1970s, Smith began by performing poetry backed by guitarist Lenny Kaye at St. Mark’s Church, laying the foundation for the Patti Smith Group. Their residency at CBGB helped define punk’s raw, experimental ethos. Her landmark debut album, "Horses" (1975), produced by John Cale, challenged conventions with its bold blend of rock and free-form spoken word, featuring innovative covers like "Gloria." She continued to push boundaries with "Radio Ethiopia" (1976) before achieving mainstream success with "Easter" (1978), which included the hit single "Because the Night," co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reaching the Top 20.

After marrying MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith in 1980, Patti stepped back from music to focus on family life. She returned in the 1990s with critically acclaimed albums such as "Gone Again" (1996) and "Gung Ho" (2000), both showcasing a mature, passionate sound and earning Grammy nominations. Beyond music, Smith is an acclaimed author; her memoir "Just Kids" (2010) won the National Book Award. Continuing to evolve artistically, she has collaborated with avant-garde groups like the Kronos Quartet and Soundwalk Collective, cementing her legacy as an enduring creative force across multiple media. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, Patti Smith remains a seminal icon in both punk rock and American culture.
