About LOUDNESS

Loudness, formed in the mid-1970s by guitarist Akira Takasaki and drummer Munetaka Higuchi—both former members of the rock band Lazy—is widely recognized as a trailblazer in Japanese heavy metal. Completing their classic lineup with vocalist Minoru Niihara and bassist Masayoshi Yamashita, Loudness initially captivated Japanese audiences with three successful albums sung entirely in Japanese. Their breakthrough came with the 1984 album *Disillusion*, which earned critical acclaim and international attention, particularly after the release of its English version.

In 1985, Loudness made a significant leap into the Western market through Atlantic Records with *Thunder in the East*, achieving moderate success in the US and becoming one of the first Japanese metal bands to do so. However, subsequent efforts such as *Lightning Strikes* (1986) and *Hurricane Eyes* (1987) saw the band adopting a more commercial, pop-metal sound to appeal to American audiences—an approach that ultimately curtailed their long-term Western impact.

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Loudness underwent various lineup changes, including collaborations with American vocalist Mike Vescera on *Soldier of Fortune* (1989) and Japanese singer Masaki Yamada from EZO. Despite these shifts, Loudness remained prolific, releasing albums like *Heavy Metal Hippies* (1994) and *Ghetto Machine* (1997). The original members reunited in 2001 to celebrate their 20th anniversary with *Spiritual Canoe*, sparking a revival marked by albums such as *Pandemonium* (2001), *Metal Mad* (2008), *The Everlasting* (2009), and *The Sun Will Rise Again* (2014).

Despite the loss of founding drummer Higuchi and bassist Yamashita, Loudness has persevered, continuing to influence both the Japanese and global metal scenes with recent releases like *Rise to Glory* (2018). Their enduring legacy as pioneers solidifies Loudness as one of Japan’s most influential and innovative heavy metal bands.
