About Absu

Emerging from the unexpected extreme metal scene of Dallas, Texas, Absu formed in 1989 initially under the name Dolmen. Founded by Shaftiel (vocals, guitar, bass) and Equitant Ifernain (lead guitar, bass), the band rebranded as Absu in 1991, drawing inspiration from ancient Mesopotamian mythology. Early demos like "Immortal Sorcery" and "Return of the Ancients" quickly captured attention, leading to a deal with Gothic Records.

The band's evolution took a defining turn when drummer and vocalist Proscriptor (Russ R. Givens) joined after the 1992 EP "The Temples of Offal." His scholarly approach to lyrics and composition became the cornerstone of Absu’s identity, prominently shaping their mythological occult metal style showcased on their 1993 debut album "Barathrum."

Signed to the influential French label Osmose Productions, Absu released several critically acclaimed works, including "Sun of Tiphareth" (1995), "The Third Storm of Cythraul" (1997), and the EP "In the Eyes of Ioldánach" (1998). These releases deepened the band’s exploration of esoteric themes, blending Sumerian and Gaelic mysticism. Their 2001 album "Tara," focused on Celtic legends, marked both a creative peak and the final contribution of founding member Equitant.

Through relentless touring alongside esteemed metal acts like Impaled Nazarene and Enslaved, Absu cemented their place as respected pioneers within the underground black metal scene. Their unique fusion of mythology and extreme metal continues to influence generations of listeners and musicians alike.
