About Iced Earth

Iced Earth, founded in 1984 by guitarist Jon Schaffer in Florida, is a stalwart of American heavy metal known for blending ’80s thrash intensity with the epic storytelling and melodic elements reminiscent of Iron Maiden. Originally named The Rose and later Purgatory, the band honed a distinctive sound through early demos like *Enter the Realm* (1988) before releasing their self-titled debut in 1990.

A defining moment came with the addition of vocalist Matthew Barlow in 1995, whose powerful voice propelled albums such as *Burnt Offerings* (1995), *The Dark Saga* (1996), and *Something Wicked This Way Comes* (1998)—works that showcased intricate songwriting and concept-driven narratives. Iced Earth’s live prowess was immortalized in the acclaimed *Alive in Athens* (1999) album, capturing the energy of their international tours.

Over the years, the band has embraced notable lineup changes, featuring vocalists like Tim “Ripper” Owens and Stu Block, who led Iced Earth through critically praised releases such as *Dystopia* (2011), *Plagues of Babylon* (2014), and *Incorruptible* (2017).
