About 38 Special

38 Special, formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1975, emerged as a powerful force in Southern rock, spearheaded by vocalist Donnie Van Zant, brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legendary frontman Ronnie Van Zant. Founded alongside guitarists Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi, bassist Ken Lyons, and drummers Jack Grondin and Steve Brookins, the band initially followed the traditional Southern boogie style, drawing inspiration from pioneers like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Their early albums, "38 Special" (1977) and "Special Delivery" (1978), garnered modest attention despite relentless touring. The band’s sound evolved with "Rockin’ into the Night" (1979), showcasing a more melodic and arena-ready blend of country-tinged blues-rock and hard-driving rock that set the stage for greater success. This shift proved pivotal with the platinum-certified "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" (1981), featuring the Top 40 hit "Hold On Loosely," followed by "Special Forces" (1982), which delivered the Top Ten single "Caught Up in You."

Throughout the 1980s, 38 Special continued to release well-received albums like "Tour de Force" (1983) and "Strength in Numbers" (1986). Despite lineup changes in the late ’80s—including Don Barnes and Steve Brookins’ departures—the band reached their commercial peak with 1989’s "Rock & Roll Strategy," which included the adult contemporary hit "Second Chance." Though subsequent albums such as "Bone Against Steel" (1991) and "Resolution" (1997) struggled to replicate earlier success, 38 Special maintained a loyal fan base through extensive touring and live releases like "Live at Sturgis" (1999). Today, their signature fusion of Southern rock roots and catchy hooks cements their place as a classic rock staple.
