About Superchunk

Superchunk, formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989, stands as a cornerstone of American indie rock. The band was founded by singer and guitarist Mac McCaughan, bassist Laura Ballance, drummer Chuck Garrison, and guitarist Jack McCook. Originally named "Chunk," they added "Super" to avoid confusion with a New York jazz group. Superchunk burst onto the scene with their 1990 breakthrough single "Slack Motherfucker," a visceral anthem of workplace frustration that quickly became a defining track of ’90s indie rock.

Throughout their prolific career, Superchunk combined the raw energy of punk with emotionally honest lyrics and dynamic melodies. While the 1990s alternative boom tempted major-label offers, they remained fiercely independent, releasing most of their work through Merge Records—an influential label co-founded by McCaughan and Ballance. Albums like the Steve Albini-produced "No Pocky for Kitty" (1991) and "On the Mouth" (1993) cemented their reputation for high-voltage power pop.

The introspective 1994 album "Foolish" reflected personal shifts within the band, addressing the end of McCaughan and Ballance’s romantic relationship. Superchunk continued to evolve over the decades, experimenting with jazz elements on 1999’s "Come Pick Me Up," produced by Jim O'Rourke, and incorporating lush orchestral arrangements on their latest album "Wild Loneliness" (2022), which features collaborators such as Owen Pallett and members of Wye Oak and Teenage Fanclub. Their 2018 release "What a Time to Be Alive" included guest appearances from Waxahatchee and David Bazan, underscoring their enduring relevance.

Renowned for relentless touring and a steadfast DIY ethos, Superchunk’s innovation and spirit have made them a seminal presence in indie music for over thirty years.
