About Seven Mary Three

Seven Mary Three is an influential rock band that rose to prominence during the mid-1990s grunge and alternative rock surge. Formed in Virginia, the group chose their name from police radio jargon featured on the 1970s TV show *CHiPS*. They independently released their debut album *Churn* in 1994, which included standout tracks like "Cumbersome" and "Water’s Edge." These songs caught the attention of radio stations and helped secure a deal with Mammoth Records.

In 1995, Seven Mary Three re-released these defining tracks on their major-label album *American Standard*, which became their commercial breakthrough. The record reached No. 24 on the Billboard 200 and achieved platinum status by selling over a million copies. While "Cumbersome" remains their best-known hit, the band’s music showcases a broader palette influenced by artists such as Tom Petty and R.E.M., going beyond the typical grunge sound of their era.

Following this success, Seven Mary Three continued to produce albums under Atlantic Records, including *RockCrown* (1997) and *Orange Ave.* (1998). Lineup changes followed, with frontman Jason Ross leading new iterations of the band through releases like *The Economy of Sound* (2001), *Dis/Location* (2004), *Day & Nightdriving* (2008), and the live album *Backbooth* (2010). Although they went on hiatus in 2012, Seven Mary Three has periodically reunited, maintaining a devoted fan base and a lasting legacy in alternative rock history.
