About Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ryuichi Sakamoto, born in Tokyo, was a pioneering composer, producer, and multimedia artist whose influence spanned electronic music, classical compositions, and film scores. As a founding member of the iconic Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sakamoto helped shape the techno genre, blending cutting-edge electronic sounds with pop sensibilities. Beyond his groundbreaking work with the group, he showcased remarkable versatility by composing sophisticated orchestral pieces and two operas, seamlessly navigating diverse musical worlds.

Throughout his prolific career, Sakamoto composed nearly 45 original scores for celebrated directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Pedro Almodóvar, Brian De Palma, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. His film soundtrack work garnered prestigious accolades, including an Academy Award and two Golden Globes, solidifying his position as a global musical visionary.

In January 2023, on his 71st birthday, Sakamoto released "12," his fifteenth solo album. This deeply personal collection featured twelve tracks selected from sketches created during his two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Although his illness limited live performances, he delivered a final, intimate concert captured in the film "Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus," a poignant farewell spotlighting his mastery of the piano. Sakamoto passed away in March 2023, leaving behind an enduring legacy celebrated worldwide through the TREES FOR SAKAMOTO initiative, which invites fans to honor his memory by supporting global reforestation projects.
