About ANOHNI and the Johnsons

ANOHNI and the Johnsons is the groundbreaking musical project led by British-born, California-raised artist ANOHNI, whose expressive voice and genre-defying style have reshaped experimental and avant-garde music since the late 1990s. After relocating to New York City as a teenager, ANOHNI immersed herself in the underground performance art scene, honing her craft through intimate late-night shows and developing a unique blend of electronic experimentation, classical arrangements, dance rhythms, and soulful expression. Drawing inspiration from iconic vocalists like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Alison Moyet, and Boy George, she formed the collaborative ensemble initially known as Antony and the Johnsons in 1998.

The project gained widespread acclaim with the 2005 release of "I Am a Bird Now," which won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and established ANOHNI as a formidable presence in contemporary music. Subsequent albums such as "The Crying Light" (2009) and "Swanlights" (2010), alongside live recordings like "Cut The World" (2012) and "TURNING" (2015), further showcased her haunting vocals and poignant explorations of feminism, identity, and environmental issues. In 2016, ANOHNI boldly shifted toward politically charged electronic dance music with "HOPELESSNESS," earning her a second Mercury Prize nomination. That same year, she received an Academy Award nomination for "Manta Ray," a song featured in the documentary *Racing Extinction*.

Spanning over three decades, ANOHNI and the Johnsons have evolved from performing with prerecorded tapes in Manhattan’s small clubs to collaborating with symphony orchestras in prestigious opera houses worldwide, cementing ANOHNI’s singular place in modern music history.
