About Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains emerged from Seattle’s vibrant music scene in the late 1980s, quickly becoming a defining force in early ’90s heavy metal and grunge. Founded by vocalist Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell after their meeting at Seattle’s Music Bank rehearsal warehouse in 1987, the band solidified its lineup with bassist Mike Starr and drummer Sean Kinney. Originally named Alice N’ Chains, they signed with Columbia Records in 1989 and released their debut album *Facelift* (1990), which achieved gold status and laid the foundation for their unique sound.

Alice in Chains mastered a compelling blend of crushing heavy metal riffs with melancholic, acoustic textures, creating a signature style marked by dark, introspective lyrics exploring themes of addiction and alienation. Their 1992 album *Dirt* became a breakthrough, reaching triple-platinum sales and cementing their status as grunge royalty. This album featured iconic tracks like "Would?," which gained additional fame through the *Singles* soundtrack. In 1994, the acoustic EP *Jar of Flies* made history as the first EP to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, showcasing the band’s versatility and emotive depth.

Despite their soaring success, substances and internal struggles, particularly Staley’s heroin addiction, led to extended hiatuses and tragedy with his passing in 2002. The band reformed in 2005, introducing William DuVall as the new lead singer. Their 2009 comeback album *Black Gives Way to Blue* received critical acclaim, Grammy nominations, and platinum certification, reaffirming their enduring influence. Subsequent releases like *The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here* (2013) further showcased Alice in Chains’ ability to bridge heavy metal and alternative rock with haunting harmonies and powerful melodies. Today, Alice in Chains remains an iconic voice, deeply etched into the legacy of the Seattle sound and alternative metal.
