About Thompson Twins

Thompson Twins emerged from the UK’s vibrant late-1970s music scene as a pioneering synth-pop band, originally formed in 1977 by Tom Bailey alongside Pete Dodd, John Roog, and Chris Bell. Over time, the group evolved into its best-known trio lineup featuring Bailey, Joe Leeway, and Alannah Currie. Rooted in London’s underground culture, they combined infectious pop melodies with innovative electronic production, creating a distinctive sound reinforced by Currie’s thought-provoking lyrics and the band’s striking blend of constructivist and surrealist aesthetics.

Their early albums, "A Product Of" and "Set," laid the groundwork before the band’s breakthrough with "Quick Step & Side Kick" (1983), produced by Alex Sadkin in the Bahamas. This record delivered dancefloor hits like "Lies," "Love on Your Side," and "If You Were Here," which gained substantial MTV exposure and club play, particularly in the US. Thompson Twins reached their commercial peak with "Into The Gap" (1984), featuring the enduring hit "Hold Me Now," alongside "Doctor! Doctor!" and "Sister of Mercy." Their presence on the iconic Live Aid stage underscored their global popularity.

Continuing their momentum, the Nile Rodgers-produced "Here's To Future Days" (1985) offered additional successes such as "Lay Your Hands On Me" and "King for a Day." After Leeway’s departure, the band released "Close to the Bone" (1987), "Big Trash" (1989), and "Queer" (1991), before shifting toward experimental sounds with the trip-hop project Babble in the mid-1990s. Tom Bailey’s enduring solo career and the band’s innovative fusion of catchy pop hooks with experimental soundscapes have solidified Thompson Twins’ status as influential synth-pop trailblazers whose impact resonates across electronic and alternative music.
