About Summoning

Summoning is a seminal Austrian black metal band formed in Vienna in 1993 by Michael Gregor (Silenius), Richard Lederer (Protector), and Alexander Trondly (Trifixion). Known for their innovative fusion of aggressive and atmospheric black metal, Summoning’s music is heavily inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth mythology, creating immersive soundscapes that transport listeners into epic fantasy realms. Their debut album, "Lugburz" (1995), released through Napalm Records, introduced the band’s distinct style, quickly followed by "Minas Morgul" (1995)—the last to feature Trondly before his departure.

Since becoming a duo, Gregor and Lederer have sustained a prolific partnership, releasing a series of critically acclaimed albums such as "Dol Guldur" (1996), "Stronghold" (1999), "Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame" (2001), "Oath Bound" (2006), "Old Mornings Dawn" (2013), and "With Doom We Come" (2018). Throughout their career, Summoning has incorporated guest musicians to enrich their epic, symphonic black metal, enhancing the cinematic quality of their music. Their dedication to blending storytelling with atmospheric metal has earned them a devoted following and solidified their status as pioneers in the genre. Summoning remains a distinctive force in black metal, celebrated for crafting a unique musical journey rooted in Tolkien-inspired mythos.
