About Cleveland Watkiss

Cleveland Watkiss, born in London’s East End, is widely regarded as one of Britain's most innovative and versatile jazz vocalists. His musical journey began at sixteen when he won local talent competitions, setting the stage for a dynamic career. Watkiss refined his vocal technique studying with opera coach Arnold Rose and furthered his training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As a founding member and current Co-Director of the Jazz Warriors, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the British jazz scene.

Known for his extraordinary vocal range and genre-defying style, Watkiss deftly blends jazz with influences from reggae, drum and bass, and classical music. His collaborations span an impressive roster of legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerrin, Björk, Bob Dylan, the Marsalis brothers, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also opened for jazz luminaries such as Cassandra Wilson and Abbey Lincoln, showcasing his standing within the global jazz community.

Watkiss’s pioneering approach has earned him significant recognition, including the Ivor Novello Award for Innovation (2021), Jazz Vocalist of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards (2017), and Best Jazz Act at the MOBO Awards (2017). His enduring influence and continued exploration of diverse musical landscapes secure his place as a leading figure in contemporary British music.
