About Los Tigres del Norte

Los Tigres del Norte, formed in 1968, are a legendary norteño band originally from Rosa Morada, Sinaloa, Mexico, and now based in California. Comprised of the Hernández brothers—Jorge (lead vocals and accordion), Hernán, Eduardo, Luis—and their cousin Oscar Lara on drums, this family ensemble rose from humble beginnings after their father's accident forced them into professional music to cover medical expenses. Their name, meaning "The Tigers of the North," was reportedly given by a U.S. immigration officer during a visa process for a 1960s performance at California's Soledad Prison, an early milestone that led to their discovery by producer Art Walker.

Los Tigres del Norte revolutionized Mexican folk music by blending traditional accordion-driven polkas with boleros, cumbias, rock rhythms, and waltzes. Their breakthrough single, "Contrabando y Traición" (1974), pioneered the modern narcocorrido subgenre, telling gripping stories of drug trafficking that resonated deeply with audiences on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Their 1984 album "Jaula de Oro" and the million-selling 1985 hit "A Ti Madrecita" further cemented their status, while their expansive discography includes over 70 albums and 22 chart-topping releases.

Known as cultural ambassadors, Los Tigres del Norte have consistently tackled themes of immigration, social justice, and working-class struggles. Their critically acclaimed works, such as "Gracias!... América... Sin Fronteras" (1986), "Raíces" (2006), and an MTV Unplugged session (2011), have earned them multiple Grammy Awards. They made history performing at California’s Folsom Prison in 2019, becoming the first major act since Johnny Cash to grace its stage. Staying true to Mexican traditions, their 2020 tribute "Y Su Palabra Es La Ley: Homenaje a Vicente Fernández" showcased mariachi and ranchera influences, expanding their diverse global fan base. Through five decades, Los Tigres del Norte remain iconic storytellers of the Mexican-American experience and pioneers in Latin music.
