About Running Wild

Running Wild is a legendary German heavy metal band that has been a staple of the European metal scene since their formation in Hamburg in 1976. Originally known as Granite Hart, the group was founded by guitarist and songwriter Rolf Kasparek alongside Preacher, bassist Stephan, and drummer Hasche. They adopted the name Running Wild in 1979, inspired by a Judas Priest song. Early in their career, the band’s sound was marked by dark, satanic themes, evident in their debut albums *Gates of Purgatory* (1984) and *Branded and Dead* (1985), released under Noise Records.

A defining turning point arrived with 1987’s *Under Jolly Roger*, where Running Wild reinvented themselves with a distinct pirate metal identity. Trading sinister imagery for high-energy riffs and nautical lore, this new direction became their hallmark and shaped subsequent albums such as *Port Royal* (1988), *Pile of Skulls* (1992), *Black Hand Inn* (1994), and later *Rapid Foray* (2016). Over a career spanning more than four decades, Running Wild has sold over five million albums worldwide, strongly influencing the pirate metal subgenre.

Despite numerous lineup changes, Kasparek has remained the creative force driving the band. After a brief retirement following their 2011 farewell show at Wacken Open Air, Running Wild returned with new material including *Shadowmaker* (2012), *Resilient* (2013), and their seventeenth studio album *Blood on Blood* (2021). Their powerful blend of historical themes and relentless metal energy continues to captivate audiences, solidifying Running Wild’s enduring legacy as pioneers of maritime metal.
