About Artful Dodger

Artful Dodger, the Southampton-based duo formed by Mark Hill and Pete Devereux in the late 1990s, played a crucial role in popularizing UK garage music. Combining Hill’s R&B and jazz influences with Devereux’s passion for hip-hop and house, they crafted a distinctive sound that set them apart from their peers. Notably, Artful Dodger favored traditional production methods, opting to re-record vocals instead of relying on time-stretching or heavy manipulation—an approach that earned them significant respect within the electronic and garage music scenes.

Their breakthrough came with the hit single "Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)" featuring then-unknown vocalist Craig David. This track became a defining anthem of UK garage, propelling both the duo and David into the spotlight. In 2000, Republic Records introduced "Re-Rewind" to the US market, coinciding with the release of their debut album, *It’s All About the Stragglers* (2000), and the mix compilation *Re-Rewind: The Sound of UK Garage* for Ministry of Sound. These releases solidified Artful Dodger’s influence on the genre during its peak popularity.

After an amicable split in 2001, Hill continued to build his career as a producer and remixer, while Devereux focused on DJing, both remaining active and influential in the music industry. Artful Dodger’s legacy endures as a defining catalyst that helped shape the UK garage movement and the broader British dance music landscape.
