About SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE

Spirit of the Beehive is a Philadelphia-based indie rock band known for their inventive, genre-blurring sound that pushes musical boundaries. Formed in 2014 and named after the 1973 Spanish drama film, the band was founded by dual vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Zach Schwartz (formerly of Glocca Morra) and Rivka Ravede. Early members included Justin Fox, Timothy Jordan, and Pat Conaboy, with the lineup evolving into a core trio featuring Schwartz, Ravede, and Corey Wichlin.

Spirit of the Beehive’s music defies easy categorization, weaving together shoegaze, psychedelic pop, glitch, and post-punk influences. Their self-titled debut (2014), released through Ice Age Records and Ranch, showcased a shoegaze-tinged indie rock foundation. This kaleidoscopic sound expanded with the trippy, collage-like “Pleasure Suck” (2017) on Tiny Engines, followed by the psych-pop and indie rock hybrid “Hypnic Jerks” (2018). After Schwartz released a solo project, Draag Me, in 2020, the band signed with Saddle Creek Records and delivered the critically acclaimed glitch-infused album “Entertainment, Death” (2021), exploring grainy vaporwave textures and emotional complexity.

In 2023, Spirit of the Beehive released the noisy, post-punk-tinged EP “I’m So Lucky,” which drew heavily from the personal fallout of Schwartz and Ravede’s breakup. Their latest full-length, “You’ll Have to Lose Something” (2024), continues this intimate exploration with a slightly more stripped-down but emotionally intense approach. Known for their dynamic lineup and unpredictable style, Spirit of the Beehive remains a compelling and constantly evolving force in the indie music scene.
