About The Gathering

The Gathering, a groundbreaking Dutch band formed in 1993, is celebrated for pioneering the symphonic and atmospheric metal genres. Originating in the Netherlands, they emerged from death metal roots with their debut album, "Always" (1993), which combined heavy riffs with distinctive keyboard layers. Early lineups featured vocalists Marike Groot and Bart Smits, whose growling style emphasized their initial extreme metal sound. Following this period, Niels Duffhues briefly fronted the band on "Almost a Dance" (1994), introducing a punk-influenced vocal approach that clashed with their evolving music.

The band’s defining transformation came with Anneke van Giersbergen’s arrival. Her emotive and versatile vocals debuted on "Mandylion" (1995), an album hailed as one of the finest in Dutch metal history. This release showcased poetic lyricism intertwined with orchestral sophistication, setting a new standard for melodic metal. The Gathering solidified their reputation with subsequent albums like "Nighttime Birds" (1997), "Superheat," and "If_Then_Else" (2000), continually refining their sound.

After parting ways with Century Media, The Gathering returned with "Souvenirs" (2003) and the semi-acoustic live album "Sleepy Buildings" (2004). Van Giersbergen’s departure in 2007 led to Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland joining the lineup, contributing to "West Pole" (2009), "Disclosure" (2012), and "Afterwords" (2014). Marking their 25th anniversary in 2014, the band reunited with former vocalists for sold-out shows before entering an indefinite hiatus. The 2016 release of "Blueprints," a compilation of rare demos and unreleased tracks, celebrates their enduring legacy as innovators of atmospheric and melodic metal.
