About The Runaways

The Runaways emerged in 1975 as a groundbreaking all-female rock band that defied conventional expectations for women in the music industry. Formed by manager Kim Fowley after meeting teenage lyricist Kari Krome, the original lineup featured Joan Jett on guitar, Sandy West on drums, Cherie Currie as lead vocalist, with Lita Ford joining soon after on guitar, and Jackie Fox on bass. Their sound fused raw, guitar-driven energy with elements of heavy metal, glam rock, and the rising punk scene, creating a powerful and influential style.

Despite facing skepticism and being dismissed by critics as a marketing gimmick, The Runaways released their self-titled debut album in 1976, followed by "Queens of Noise" (1977). While their aggressive sound struggled to catch on in the U.S., they found fervent success in Japan, where the single "Cherry Bomb" topped the charts and sold-out arenas welcomed their tours. They documented this acclaim in the live album "Live in Japan". Internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and conflicts with Fowley led to lineup changes and eventually the band's split in 1979 after releasing "And Now...The Runaways".

The Runaways’ enduring legacy lies in paving the way for female rock artists, inspiring both feminist punk movements and hard rock musicians for decades. Joan Jett and Lita Ford notably launched successful solo careers, with Jett’s "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" (1982) becoming an iconic anthem. Renewed interest in The Runaways was sparked by the 2010 biopic and recent reissues like Cherry Red Records’ 2023 box set "Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin 1976-1978", cementing their place as trailblazers in rock history.
