About The Manhattan Transfer

The Manhattan Transfer is a legendary vocal jazz and pop quartet that has left an indelible mark on music since its formation in New York City on October 1, 1972. Founded by Tim Hauser, a visionary cab driver, the group originally featured Laurel Massé, Janis Siegel, and Alan Paul—then a performer in Broadway’s *Grease*. Known for their impeccable harmonies and stylish performances, The Manhattan Transfer quickly rose to fame as a symbol of vocal excellence. In 1979, Cheryl Bentyne replaced Massé, and following Hauser’s passing in 2014, Trist Curless joined the lineup, continuing the group’s enduring legacy.

Celebrated for seamlessly blending jazz and pop, The Manhattan Transfer boasts a career highlighted by 10 Grammy Awards from 20 nominations. Their groundbreaking success in 1981 made them the first group to win Grammys in both Pop and Jazz categories in the same year. Their 1985 album "Vocalese" garnered an impressive twelve Grammy nominations, second only to Michael Jackson’s *Thriller* that year. Beyond awards, their collaborations with icons such as Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, B.B. King, Chaka Khan, and Phil Collins have cemented their status as one of the most influential vocal ensembles in modern music.
