About Grupo Niche

Grupo Niche is Colombia’s most iconic salsa orchestra, founded in 1979 by the visionary Jairo Varela Martínez, a native of the Chocó region. The group began their musical journey in Bogotá but soon moved to Buenaventura on Colombia’s Pacific coast in search of creative inspiration. By 1983, Grupo Niche had firmly established their base in Cali, a vibrant city that would become synonymous with their distinctive salsa sound.

Their 1990 album, "Cielo de Tambores," marked a major breakthrough, featuring timeless hits such as "Una Aventura," "Busca por Dentro," "Se pareció tanto a ti," and "Cali Ají." These tracks not only propelled the band to continental stardom but also transformed salsa music across Latin America. Through extensive touring, Grupo Niche built a strong connection with Colombian immigrants and diverse ethnic communities, expanding their influence beyond national borders.

The sudden death of Jairo Varela in 2012 was deeply mourned across Latin America, underscoring his profound impact on music and culture. Despite this loss, Grupo Niche has continued to honor his legacy, earning critical acclaim and prestigious awards, including Latin Grammy and Grammy nominations in 2016, and winning both awards in 2020. Their recognition at events like the Latin Billboard and Premios Lo Nuestro in 2017 affirms their status as enduring leaders in the salsa genre, whose vibrant rhythms continue to inspire new generations of fans worldwide.
