About Sodom

Sodom, founded in 1981 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, stands as a cornerstone of German thrash metal and a key member of the country’s iconic "Big Four," alongside Kreator, Tankard, and Destruction. Led by the unwavering presence of bassist and vocalist Tom Angelripper, the band carved out a fierce and aggressive sound rooted in influences like Mercyful Fate, Accept, and Venom, while drawing from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Their 1985 debut EP, "In the Sign of Evil," delivered raw intensity that not only defined early thrash but also played a pivotal role in sparking the black metal movement, with tracks such as "Outbreak of Evil" and "Blasphemer" becoming cult anthems.

Sodom’s sound evolved throughout their career, embracing political themes on albums like "Persecution Mania" (1987) and achieving groundbreaking commercial success with "Agent Orange" (1989)—the first German thrash album to chart nationally. The band continued to experiment by incorporating death metal influences on "Tapping the Vein" (1992) and exploring groove metal elements in later works such as "Epitome of Torture" (2013) and "Genesis XIX" (2020). Despite numerous lineup changes over four decades, Sodom has retained their aggressive spirit and influential status, consistently shaping the thrash metal landscape both in Germany and worldwide. Their relentless energy, sharp political critique, and evolving sound have solidified their legacy as thrash metal legends.
