About Orishas

Orishas is a pioneering Cuban hip-hop group formed in Paris in the late 1990s by Roldán González Rivero, Hiram Riverí Medina (Ruzzo), Yotuel Omar Romero Manzanares, and Liván Nuñez Alemán (Flaco-Pro). Emerging from the Cuban diaspora in Europe, the band uniquely fused Afro-Cuban rhythms, hip-hop beats, melodic vocals, and socially conscious lyrics that explore themes like immigration, identity, racism, and Afro-Cuban spirituality. Their breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed 2000 debut album "A Lo Cubano," which propelled them to international fame and earned them massive audiences in Cuba itself.

After Flaco-Pro’s departure, Orishas continued as a trio, releasing "Emigrante" (2002) with a more melodic approach, followed by "El Kilo" (2005), an album that solidified their sound and expanded their European fan base. Their 2007 compilation "Antidiotico" garnered a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Urban Music Album, underscoring their growing influence. The band maintained momentum with "Cosita Buena" (2008) before entering a hiatus.

Reuniting in 2016, Orishas returned to recording in Cuba for the first time and collaborated with prominent Latin artists such as Gente de Zona and Descemer Bueno on songs like "Cuba Isla Bella." Their 2018 album "Gourmet," released under Sony, showcased cross-generational partnerships with stars like Franco de Vita and Beatriz Luengo, reaffirming Orishas’ vital role in the evolution of Afro-Cuban music and Latin urban culture. With a career spanning over two decades, Orishas remains an enduring symbol of Cuban hip-hop’s innovation and global reach.
