About Guided by Voices

Guided by Voices, formed in the early 1980s in Dayton, Ohio, is a seminal indie rock band led by the prolific songwriter Robert Pollard. Initially a basement recording project while Pollard worked as a schoolteacher, the band self-released six lo-fi albums between 1986 and 1992, cultivating a devoted underground following with their distinct blend of British Invasion melodies, progressive rock complexity, and brief, catchy pop songs. Their breakthrough arrived in 1994 with the critically acclaimed album "Bee Thousand," recorded on four-track equipment and released by Matador Records, which elevated Guided by Voices from cult status to alternative rock favorites.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the band evolved their sound—most notably on the polished rock album "Isolation Drills" (2001), produced by Ric Ocasek—before returning to their indie roots with "Universal Truths and Cycles" (2002). Known for their ever-shifting lineup, key collaborators like guitarist Tobin Sprout contributed significantly to their early sound. Influential supporters such as Kim Deal and Thurston Moore helped amplify their reach, with singles like "I Am a Scientist" gaining mainstream attention.

Following a temporary breakup in 2004, Guided by Voices reunited in 2010 with their classic lineup, launching a new period of prolific creativity. Recent albums including "Let's Go Eat the Factory" (2012), "Motivational Jumpsuit" (2014), "Earth Man Blues" (2021), "Strut of Kings" (2024), and "Universe Room" (2025) showcase Pollard’s undiminished songwriting prowess. With over three dozen studio albums and an ever-evolving sound, Guided by Voices remain enduring innovators in indie and lo-fi rock, celebrated for their experimental spirit and lasting influence.
