About Boogie Down Productions

Boogie Down Productions (BDP) emerged in 1985 as a pioneering hip-hop group that reshaped the genre’s landscape during the late 1980s. Founded by Brooklyn-born MC KRS-One (Laurence Krisna Parker) and DJ Scott La Rock, whom KRS-One met at a Bronx homeless shelter, BDP quickly captured attention with their 1987 debut album, "Criminal Minded." This landmark record fused hardcore rap with vivid street narratives and innovative ragga-infused production, especially evident in the track "9mm Goes Bang." Tragically, Scott La Rock was murdered shortly after the album’s release, prompting KRS-One to carry on BDP’s mission with renewed purpose.

Under KRS-One’s leadership—who became known as "The Teacher"—Boogie Down Productions shifted toward socially conscious and politically charged themes. Their 1988 album, "By All Means Necessary," featured powerful anthems like "My Philosophy" and "Stop the Violence," which helped spark important cultural movements against systemic injustice and street violence. Subsequent releases, including "Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop" (1989) and the more didactic "Edutainment" (1990), solidified BDP’s reputation for combining raw storytelling with intellectual rigor. The group’s final album, "Sex and Violence" (1992), closed this influential chapter before KRS-One embarked on a solo career with "Return of the Boom Bap" (1993).

Boogie Down Productions remains a foundational force in hip-hop history, renowned for blending hardcore beats with meaningful messages, inspiring generations through both their music and activism.
