About Suntou Susso

Suntou Susso is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, kora virtuoso, singer, and composer rooted in a prestigious 700-year-old Griot lineage from The Gambia. Born into this rich Mandinka tradition, Suntou was mentored by his father, Mamudou Susso, a celebrated musician who instilled in him the ancestral role of preserving culture through music, poetry, and storytelling. Raised between The Gambia and Senegal, he now lives in the UK, where his exceptional talent and magnetic stage presence have earned him international recognition.

Specializing in the kora—a distinctive 22-string African harp-lute unique to the Griottes—Suntou masterfully blends traditional West African sounds with contemporary Afrofunk and soul. His soothing vocals and innovative compositions connect deeply with audiences worldwide, both in his solo performances and with his live band. Suntou enjoys a strong following in his homeland, where his singles and videos receive consistent airplay on national TV and radio.

Beyond captivating performances, Suntou Susso is dedicated to education, sharing his heritage through dynamic kora and drumming workshops in schools and universities. He actively contributes to cultural initiatives like Project African Experience during Black History Month, ensuring the Griot legacy thrives while evolving creatively. As both a guardian of tradition and a forward-thinking artist, Suntou Susso continues to shape the global appreciation of African music.
