About Wild Billy Childish

Wild Billy Childish, born Steven John Hamper on December 1, 1959, in Chatham, Kent, is one of British rock’s most prolific and uncompromising figures. Since 1977, he has released over 150 albums and countless singles across a multitude of bands, forging a raw, passionate sound deeply rooted in 1950s and 1960s rock & roll, garage punk, blues, and American folk. His signature style features gritty, Link Wray-inspired guitar riffs paired with reedy, emotive vocals, all captured through a DIY ethic that embraces lo-fi, vintage recording methods favoring authenticity over polish.

Emerging from a turbulent childhood marked by family strife and undiagnosed dyslexia, Childish channeled his hardships into a fiercely honest artistic expression. He spearheaded influential garage rock outfits like the Pop Rivets, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars, and the cult-classic Thee Headcoats—a band that released nineteen albums between 1989 and 1999 and earned praise from notable acts such as Nirvana and Mudhoney. Beyond music, Wild Billy Childish is an accomplished poet, novelist, and visual artist, with works like his debut novel "My Fault" (1996) and internationally exhibited artwork underscoring his boundary-pushing creativity.

Continuing to evolve, projects such as Wild Billy Childish & the British Empire and the Chatham Singers blend punk energy with blues traditions, underscoring his lasting influence on underground culture. Compilations like "I Am the Billy Childish" and "Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot!" provide accessible gateways into his vast and influential catalog, solidifying his reputation as an enduring force in independent music and art.
