About Stereolab

Stereolab, formed in London in 1990 by guitarist and keyboardist Tim Gane and French vocalist Laetitia Sadier, quickly became a groundbreaking force in indie and experimental rock. Emerging after Gane’s previous band McCarthy disbanded, they named themselves after Vanguard Records' vintage hi-fi division, embracing a retro-futuristic aesthetic. Launching their own Duophonic Records, the duo released a string of influential EPs, including their 1991 debut "Super 45" and the 1993 underground favorite "The Groop Played 'Space Age Bachelor Pad Music,'" noted for blending lounge-pop with indie sensibilities.

Stereolab’s breakthrough album, "Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements" (1993), fused hypnotic Krautrock rhythms with captivating melodies, setting the stage for a sonic evolution that embraced jazz, hip-hop, and dance influences. This expansion culminated in their most celebrated work, "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" (1996), produced with Tortoise’s John McEntire, which broadened their acclaim and influenced contemporaries like Blur and Pavement. Collaborations with Jim O’Rourke and McEntire further enriched albums such as "Dots and Loops" (1997) and "Sound-Dust" (2001), showcasing intricate, artful arrangements.

Despite the tragic loss of keyboardist Mary Hansen in 2002, Stereolab honored her memory with "Margerine Eclipse" (2004) before continuing to explore poppier sounds on "Chemical Chords" (2008). After a hiatus starting in 2009, the band returned in 2019 with deluxe reissues and extensive touring, reaffirming their enduring legacy. Celebrated for seamlessly blending retro influences with forward-thinking experimentation, Stereolab remains a touchstone for alternative music, impacting diverse artists across indie rock and hip-hop for over three decades.
