About Laurie Anderson

Laurie Anderson, born June 5, 1947, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is a groundbreaking American avant-garde artist celebrated for her innovative fusion of performance art, electronic music, and multimedia storytelling. Trained initially as a violinist, Anderson moved to New York City at age twenty, where she earned a B.A. in art history from Barnard College (1969) and an M.F.A. in sculpture from Columbia University (1972). Early in her career, she also taught art history and Egyptian architecture at City College, reflecting her deep intellectual engagement with diverse disciplines.

Anderson rose to mainstream prominence with her 1981 electronic single "O Superman," an unexpected hit that reached number two on the UK charts. This breakthrough led to her Warner Bros. debut album, "Big Science" (1982), which expanded on themes from her ambitious seven-hour multimedia performance "United States." Her subsequent album "Mister Heartbreak" (1984) featured collaborations with notable artists such as Peter Gabriel and Adrian Belew, further solidifying her role at the forefront of experimental music.

Throughout her multifaceted career, Anderson has continually pushed artistic boundaries. She has partnered with influential musicians including Brian Eno and Lou Reed, whom she married in 2008. Her projects span concert films like "Home of the Brave," theatrical works, and collaborative albums such as "Landfall" (2018) with the Kronos Quartet, inspired by Hurricane Sandy. Her introspective film and album "Heart of a Dog" (2015) explore themes of love and loss with poignant sensitivity.
