About Miami Sound Machine

Miami Sound Machine, originally formed in 1975 as the Miami Latin Boys by keyboardist Emilio Estefan Jr., quickly became a trailblazer in the Latin crossover scene of the 1980s. The group’s transformation began when vocalists Gloria Fajardo and her cousin Merci Navarro Murciano joined during a wedding performance, leading to the band’s rebranding as Miami Sound Machine. Initially, they released four Spanish-language albums under CBS Discos, cultivating a devoted Latin audience.

Their breakthrough came with the 1984 English-language debut "Eyes of Innocence," which featured the infectious dance hit "Dr. Beat." However, it was the 1985 album "Primitive Love" that catapulted Miami Sound Machine to international stardom. The single "Conga!" became a phenomenon, notably making history as the first song to chart simultaneously on Billboard’s pop, Latin, soul, and dance lists. Following this, hits like "Bad Boy," "Words Get in the Way," "1-2-3," and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" solidified their place in 1980s pop music, with Gloria Estefan firmly established as the dynamic frontwoman.

The band’s momentum was interrupted in 1990 when Gloria suffered severe injuries in a tour bus accident, requiring extensive recovery. This period marked a creative shift, as Miami Sound Machine embraced their Cuban roots on Grammy-winning albums "Mi Tierra" (1993) and "Abriendo Puertas" (1995), showcasing traditional Latin sounds. Over time, original members departed, with Emilio Estefan Jr. focusing on production and management, while Miami Sound Machine remained an enduring symbol of Latin pop’s global rise.
