About Falco

Falco, born Johann Hölzel in Vienna on February 19, 1957, remains Austria’s most internationally acclaimed pop artist, known for pioneering a unique blend of techno-pop, rap, and classical influences. A classically trained musician from the Vienna Conservatoire, Falco ventured into West Berlin’s jazz-rock scene before adopting his stage name, inspired by German ski jumper Falko Weißflog. Returning to Vienna, he played bass for the punk band Drahdiwaberl and co-wrote their notable track "Ganz Wien."

Launching his solo career in 1982 with the album *Einzelhaft*, Falco broke new ground with the single "Der Kommissar." The track's innovative fusion of German-language rap and techno-pop garnered widespread success across Europe and resonated with American club audiences, bolstered further by After the Fire’s English cover. Falco’s controversial 1985 single "Jeanny" pushed boundaries with its provocative themes, facing radio bans but ultimately topping German charts and solidifying his reputation for daring artistry.

His career peaked with the 1986 album *Falco 3*, featuring the iconic hit "Rock Me Amadeus." This theatrical blend of synthesizer-driven pop and classical motifs achieved the rare feat of topping both U.S. and UK charts simultaneously, a milestone unprecedented for an Austrian artist. Although subsequent releases like *Emotional* (1986) and *Wiener Blut* (1988) enjoyed moderate attention, Falco’s influence on European pop and new wave music remains indelible.

Tragically, Falco’s life was cut short at age 40 in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on February 6, 1998. Yet, his innovative style and unforgettable hits continue to inspire generations, cementing his place as a true legend in music history.
