About Belphegor

Belphegor is a pioneering Austrian blackened death metal band formed in 1991, initially under the name Betrayer. The original lineup featured vocalist/bassist Maxx, guitarists Helmuth Lehner and Sigurd, and drummer Chris. In 1993, the group adopted the name Belphegor, inspired by one of the seven princes of Hell, quickly making their mark on the underground metal scene with the demo "Bloodbath in Paradise." Following Maxx’s departure, Helmuth took over lead vocals, and with bassist Mario "Marius" Klausner joining, they released their debut album, "The Last Supper" (1995), laying the foundation for a brutal blend of European black metal and death metal infused with overtly Satanic themes.

Belphegor steadily gained international attention through successive albums such as "Blutsabbath" (1997), "Necrodaemon Terrorsathan" (2000), and "Lucifer Incestus" (2003). Their signing with Nuclear Blast Records in 2006 marked a turning point, leading to acclaimed releases including "Pestapokalypse VI" (2006), "Bondage Goat Zombie" (2008), and "Walpurgis Rites: Hexenwahn" (2009), the latter earning chart placements in Germany, Austria, and the United States. Further albums like "Blood Magick Necromance" (2011) — their first to chart in the U.S. — and "Conjuring the Dead" (2014), which was recorded with noted producer Erik Rutan, solidified their global reputation. "Totenritual" (2017) and their 12th studio album, "Devils" (2022), continue to showcase Belphegor’s relentless drive and dark artistry, with Helmuth remaining the band’s enduring creative force.

With a career spanning over three decades, Belphegor remains an unyielding force within extreme metal, renowned for their ferocious sound, provocative imagery, and contributions to shaping the blackened death metal subgenre worldwide.
