About T. Rex

T. Rex, the pioneering British glam rock band, was the creative force of Marc Bolan, born Mark Feld in London on September 30, 1947. Bolan began his artistic journey early, dabbling in acting and modeling before embarking on a musical career that started with folk-psychedelic influences. In 1967, he formed Tyrannosaurus Rex, an acoustic duo with percussionist Steve Peregrin Took, blending mystical lyrics and Eastern melodies. Working with producer Tony Visconti, they released three albums between 1968 and 1969, gaining support from BBC’s John Peel and London's underground scene.

The band's sound evolved dramatically after Took's departure, shifting toward electric boogie rock with the release of "Ride a White Swan." Renamed T. Rex and expanded to a four-piece with Mickey Finn, Bill Legend, and Steve Currie, they achieved widespread acclaim. Their 1971 album, "Electric Warrior," topped UK charts and featured the enduring hit "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," which also found success in the US. Following up with "The Slider" (1972), T. Rex solidified their status as glam rock icons, though their American popularity remained limited.

Although later albums like "Futuristic Dragon" (1976) demonstrated creative experimentation, T. Rex’s commercial peak waned mid-decade. Bolan's charismatic flamboyance—marked by glittering costumes and magnetic stage presence—greatly influenced punk, metal, new wave, and the 1980s new romantic movement. The band's remarkable trajectory ended tragically with Bolan’s death in a car accident on September 16, 1977. Nonetheless, T. Rex’s fusion of rock and glam continues to resonate, cementing their legacy as a cornerstone of British music history.
