About 陰陽座

Formed in 1999, 陰陽座 (Onmyo-Za) has established itself as one of Japan’s most unique heavy metal bands by seamlessly merging powerful metal sounds with rich elements of traditional Japanese culture. Drawing inspiration from mythological and historical themes, the band explores the philosophy of yin and yang, elemental forces, and ancient spirituality—concepts that resonate deeply in their lyrics, which often feature obscure kanji characters. Onmyo-Za further distinguishes itself through its theatrical performances, where members don elaborate costumes inspired by the Heian period, embodying figures from classical Japanese lore.

Musically, Onmyo-Za channels the spirit of legendary metal acts like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, delivering dynamic, straightforward heavy metal fueled by the dual vocal interplay of bassist and leader Matatabi and female vocalist Kuroneko. This yin-yang vocal harmony mirrors the dual guitar work of Maneki and Karukan, creating a rich, layered sound that captivates fans.

Since signing with King Records in 2001, Onmyo-Za has maintained a prolific pace, releasing nearly an album each year. After several years of moderate success, they achieved a commercial breakthrough with their 2006 compilation "Inyou-Shugyoku," which entered the Oricon top 20. Their 2008 album "Chimimouryo" climbed to number nine, followed by 2014’s dual releases "Fuujin Kaikou" and "Raijin Sousei," reaching positions 10 and 11 respectively. Their 2016 album "Karyoubinga" marked their highest charting success, peaking at number seven. Through these achievements, Onmyo-Za has solidified its reputation as a leading force in Japanese metal, renowned for its masterful blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary metal.
