About Moby

Moby, born Richard Melville Hall in Darien, Connecticut, is a pioneering force in electronic music who rose from the underground scene to mainstream acclaim. Named after his great-great-granduncle, novelist Herman Melville, he began his musical journey in hardcore punk bands like Vatican Commandos before making a decisive shift to the vibrant New York City dance club scene. Moby’s breakthrough came in 1991 with the single "Go," a dynamic remix combining pulsating house beats and the iconic Twin Peaks theme, which broke into the British Top Ten and cemented his status as a leading techno producer.

Known for his innovative blend of rapid disco rhythms, distorted guitars, and cinematic samples, Moby defied electronic music conventions by fusing elements of techno, punk, gospel, and rock. His 1995 album "Everything Is Wrong" showcased this genre-defying sound, while the 1999 release "Play" catapulted him to international stardom. "Play" uniquely sampled Alan Lomax’s archival field recordings, earning double platinum certification in the U.S. and topping charts in the UK.

Throughout his career, Moby has remained artistically restless, exploring diverse musical directions on albums like "Animal Rights" (1996), "18" (2002), "Hotel" (2005), and "Wait for Me" (2009). His later work includes collaborations with his post-punk-infused group Moby & the Void Pacific Choir, with notable albums like "These Systems Are Failing" (2016) and "More Fast Songs About the Apocalypse" (2017). Beyond music, Moby is recognized for his environmental activism, vegan lifestyle, and outspoken views, further distinguishing him in the electronic music landscape. His enduring influence spans techno, rock, and ambient genres, marking him as one of the most recognizable and innovative artists in modern music history.
