About Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan, born January 28, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a renowned Canadian singer-songwriter celebrated for her emotive pop music and introspective lyrics. Adopted by the McLachlan family, she developed her artistic skills early, studying classical piano, guitar, and voice before fronting the new wave band October Game in high school. Discovered by Nettwerk Records, McLachlan eventually signed with the label and moved to Vancouver to begin her professional career.

Her debut album, "Touch" (1988), achieved platinum status in Canada and gold in the U.S., setting the stage for her signature atmospheric sound crafted alongside producer Pierre Marchand. The deeply personal "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" (1993) brought mainstream attention with the haunting hit "Possession." McLachlan’s major breakthrough came with "Surfacing" (1997), which reached number two on the Billboard 200 and featured iconic singles like "Building a Mystery," "Adia," and "Angel." That same year, she co-founded Lilith Fair, a pioneering all-female music festival that challenged industry norms while becoming the top-grossing tour of 1997.

Continuing her success, McLachlan released "Afterglow" (2003), the multi-platinum holiday favorite "Wintersong" (2006), and "Shine On" (2014), inspired by personal loss and topping Canadian charts. Her 2016 album "Wonderland" further solidified her legacy, earning additional Grammy and Juno Awards. Inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017, Sarah McLachlan remains a passionate performer and philanthropist, dedicating efforts to the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which offers free lessons to at-risk youth.
