About Sentenced

Sentenced, a seminal Finnish heavy metal band formed in 1989, played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s melodic death and gothic metal scenes. They began their career with the debut album "Shadows of the Past" (early 1990s), released on a small French independent label, which showcased a traditional black metal sound. Seeking artistic growth, Sentenced revamped their style by adding bassist and vocalist Taneli Jarva for the breakthrough album "North From Here" (1992). This release marked a shift to a more melodic and technically sophisticated sound, earning considerable acclaim across Scandinavia, particularly in Sweden.

In 1993, the band further evolved with "The Trooper" EP, featuring a distinctive cover of Iron Maiden’s classic, signaling their move toward a British metal-inspired melodic approach. This new direction was fully realized on their 1995 album "Amok" and the "Love and Death" EP, which deepened their blend of heavy riffs and melodic complexity. After Jarva’s departure, guitarist Miika Tenkula and new vocalist Ville Laihiala became the creative core, steering Sentenced through their next era. Their 1997 album "Down" showcased this revitalized lineup’s prowess.

Sentenced continued to refine their sound with the retrospective compilation "Story: A Recollection" (1998) and critically acclaimed albums "Crimson" (2000) and "The Cold White Light" (2002). Throughout their career, Sentenced expertly balanced aggressive metal foundations with melodic sophistication, cementing their legacy as pioneers of Finnish extreme metal before disbanding in 2005.
