About Buffalo Springfield

Buffalo Springfield, formed in Los Angeles in 1966, stands as one of the most influential yet short-lived bands in 1960s rock history. The group’s inception was sparked by a chance encounter on Sunset Boulevard when Stephen Stills and Richie Furay spotted Neil Young’s distinctive hearse. Joining forces with bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin, the band took their name from a steamroller company and quickly gained a foothold in the vibrant Los Angeles music scene, performing at iconic venues like the Troubadour and Whisky A Go Go.

Buffalo Springfield’s breakout moment came with “For What It’s Worth” (1967), Stephen Stills’ politically charged anthem inspired by the Sunset Strip riots. This track soared into the Billboard Top Ten and became an enduring symbol of 1960s social unrest. Musically, the band masterfully blended folk rock, country-rock, psychedelia, soul, and hard rock, especially on their acclaimed second album, *Buffalo Springfield Again* (1967), which showcased their diverse sound, though it didn’t produce further major hits.

Despite their creative brilliance, internal tensions—exacerbated by legal troubles such as Bruce Palmer’s drug-related issues and deportations—strained the group. These challenges culminated in their 1968 breakup soon after releasing their third album, *Last Time Around* (1968), featuring new bassist Jim Messina as producer. The band’s legacy carried on as members went on to significant success: Young and Stills became central figures in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, while Furay and Messina founded the pioneering country-rock band Poco.

Buffalo Springfield reunited briefly in 2010 for touring and celebrated their enduring influence with the 2018 release of *What’s That Sound? Complete Albums Collection*, a remastered anthology honoring their groundbreaking contribution to late-60s rock music. Their fusion of genres and powerful social commentary continue to resonate, securing Buffalo Springfield’s place as a seminal force in American rock history.
