About Mike Oldfield

Mike Oldfield, born on May 15, 1953, in Reading, England, is renowned as one of progressive rock’s most innovative composers. His musical journey began early, forming the folk duo Sallyangie with his sister Sally at just 14, which resulted in the album *Children of the Sun*. By 16, Oldfield was performing with Kevin Ayers’ band the Whole World, collaborating with experimental musicians before taking on lead guitar for their 1971 release, *Shooting at the Moon*.

Oldfield rose to international fame with his groundbreaking debut album, *Tubular Bells* (1973), Virgin Records’ first release. This atmospheric, 49-minute instrumental masterpiece is notable for being performed almost entirely by Oldfield himself on nearly 30 instruments. The haunting melodies of *Tubular Bells* gained wider recognition after featuring in the film *The Exorcist*, while the album topped UK charts for months and sold over 16 million copies worldwide. It also won Oldfield a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition in 1974.

Throughout his career, Mike Oldfield continuously evolved, releasing critically acclaimed records such as *Hergest Ridge* (1974), *Ommadawn* (1975), and *Incantations* (1978). He embraced more pop-oriented sounds in the 1980s with albums like *QE2* (1980), *Crises* (1983), and *Discovery* (1984). In the 1990s, he collaborated with producer Trevor Horn on *Tubular Bells II* (1992), marking a successful return to the charts. Later works like *Songs of Distant Earth* (1994) and the classical-inspired *Music of the Spheres* (2008) showcased his versatility.

After a brief hiatus, Oldfield returned with the well-received *Man on the Rocks* (2014), followed by *Return to Ommadawn* (2017), a handmade, acoustic album that reaffirmed his dedication to intricate, traditional musicianship. Over decades, Mike Oldfield has remained a pioneering force, seamlessly blending rock, folk, classical, and new age influences into a unique and enduring musical legacy.
