About U2

Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 emerged from the city’s post-punk scene to become one of rock music’s most iconic and enduring bands. The group’s classic lineup—Bono (vocals), the Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums)—came together after Mullen posted a notice seeking bandmates. Early on, they briefly included Dick Evans before solidifying their lineup. After winning a Guinness-sponsored talent contest in 1978, U2 secured management under Paul McGuinness and signed with Island Records. Their debut album, *Boy* (1980), introduced their atmospheric, earnest sound shaped by producer Steve Lillywhite, blending moody guitars with introspective themes, including their open embrace of Christianity.

U2’s breakthrough came with *War* (1983), featuring politically charged anthems like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day" that propelled them into international stardom. Their unforgettable Live Aid performance in 1985 and the live EP *Under a Blood Red Sky* further cemented their rising fame. Collaborations with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois ushered in a new sonic era with *The Unforgettable Fire* (1984) and the critically acclaimed *The Joshua Tree* (1987), which generated global hits such as "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For."

Continuously evolving, U2 embraced electronic and alternative rock on *Achtung Baby* (1991), followed by experimental efforts like *Zooropa* (1993) and *Pop* (1997). The band returned to their classic sound with *All That You Can't Leave Behind* (2000), winning multiple Grammys for "Beautiful Day." Subsequent albums like *How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb* (2004) brought further accolades and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2005. Known for their groundbreaking tours—including Zoo TV and the record-setting 360 Tour—and ventures like the *Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark* Broadway production, U2 remains a force in music and activism. Recent releases like *Songs of Innocence* (2014), *Songs of Experience* (2017), and the intimate *Songs of Surrender* (2023) showcase their continued creativity. Their Las Vegas Sphere residency and singles like "Atomic City" (2023) highlight a band that skilfully bridges past and present, sustaining nearly five decades of musical innovation and global influence.
