About Procol Harum

Procol Harum, a seminal British rock band formed in 1967, carved a unique niche by blending psychedelic, art rock, and progressive rock elements into an evocative soundscape. Founded by pianist and vocalist Gary Brooker—whose earlier group, The Paramounts, included future Procol guitarist Robin Trower—the band quickly gained international acclaim with their debut single, "A Whiter Shade of Pale." This haunting track, featuring enigmatic lyrics by Keith Reid and a melody inspired by Bach’s "Air on the G String," topped the UK charts for six weeks and reached the US top five, making Procol Harum one of the few British acts to enjoy such instant success.

The band’s signature style combined Brooker’s soulful, melancholic vocals with Reid’s philosophical and poetic lyrics, creating richly atmospheric songs that explored fate and human experience. Albums like "Shine on Brightly" (1968) and the critically lauded "A Salty Dog" (1969) showcased a sophisticated fusion of blues, classical influences, and orchestral arrangements. A pioneer in orchestral rock, Procol Harum made history with the 1972 live album "Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra," which reached number five on US charts and featured the hit "Conquistador."

Despite lineup changes and a brief breakup in 1977, Brooker revived the band in the 1990s, releasing notable albums such as "The Well’s on Fire" (2004) and "Novum" (2017), their first new studio record in over a decade. Over five decades of creative evolution solidified Procol Harum’s legacy as innovators bridging rock and orchestral music. The band’s storied journey concluded following the deaths of Gary Brooker in 2022 and Keith Reid in 2023, closing a remarkable chapter in British rock history.
