About The Swell Season

The Swell Season is a compelling Irish-Czech folk duo formed by Glen Hansard, frontman of the Irish rock band the Frames, and Czech singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová. Drawing their name from a novel by renowned Czech humanist writer Josef Škvorecký, the pair is celebrated for their intimate acoustic arrangements and evocative vocal harmonies. They first gained widespread attention with their self-titled debut album (2006), which laid the foundation for their heartfelt songwriting and authentic sound.

Their breakthrough came through the critically acclaimed 2007 indie film *Once*, in which Hansard and Irglová starred as working-class immigrants while performing original songs. The soundtrack featured their Oscar-winning track "Falling Slowly," which earned the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008. This success propelled The Swell Season to international fame, with the *Once* soundtrack achieving gold certification and leading to extensive sold-out tours worldwide.

Despite ending their romantic relationship in early 2009, Hansard and Irglová maintained their creative partnership, releasing their sophisticated second album, *Strict Joy* (2009). Since then, both artists have pursued solo endeavors but occasionally reunite, preserving The Swell Season’s enduring influence on contemporary folk and indie music. Their blend of genuine chemistry and poignant storytelling continues to captivate audiences globally, solidifying their place as a defining voice in modern acoustic music.
