About Rainbow

Rainbow, formed in 1975 by legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore after his departure from Deep Purple, quickly established itself as a cornerstone of 1970s heavy metal. The band initially featured American vocalist Ronnie James Dio and members of Dio's former band, Elf. Their debut album, *Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow* (1975), introduced fans to the powerful single "Man on the Silver Mountain," gaining swift acclaim across Europe.

Rainbow reached their creative zenith with the 1976 album *Rising*, a landmark in heavy metal renowned for its blend of neo-classical guitar mastery and Dio’s fantasy-inspired lyrics. This record was later hailed as one of the greatest heavy metal albums in history. The lineup also included bassist Jimmy Bain, keyboardist Tony Carey, and drummer Cozy Powell, all contributing to the band’s dynamic sound.

Following *Long Live Rock ’n’ Roll* (1978), tensions between Blackmore and Dio led to Dio’s departure in 1979 to join Black Sabbath. Rainbow’s style then shifted to a more radio-friendly hard rock approach with *Down to Earth* (1979), featuring hits like "Since You’ve Been Gone." The arrival of vocalist Joe Lynn Turner revitalized the band in the early 1980s, highlighted by their highest-charting single "I Surrender" from *Difficult to Cure* (1981).

Although subsequent albums such as *Straight Between the Eyes* (1982) and *Bent Out of Shape* (1983) saw diminished commercial impact, Rainbow’s influence on heavy metal and hard rock remains undeniable. The band disbanded in 1984 when Blackmore rejoined Deep Purple but reunited intermittently, most notably in 2015, reinforcing Rainbow’s lasting legacy as pioneers who fused classical elements with powerful rock.
