About Mad Professor

Mad Professor, born Neal Fraser around 1955 in Georgetown, Guyana, is a pioneering force in dub reggae and a transformative figure in electronic music production. Moving to London at age 13, Fraser’s early fascination with electronics—earning him the nickname "Mad Professor"—set the stage for a groundbreaking career. In 1979, he founded Ariwa Studios in his South London living room, naming it after a Nigerian word meaning "sound" or "communication." Ariwa quickly grew into the largest Black-owned studio in the UK, eventually operating a 24-track facility in West Norwood.

As a devoted disciple of Lee "Scratch" Perry, Mad Professor revolutionized dub by bridging its traditional roots with the emerging digital age. His critically acclaimed *Dub Me Crazy* series (1982–1993) spans 12 volumes, blending richly layered, space-infused soundscapes that expanded the genre’s sonic horizons. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, he produced hits for artists like Pato Banton, Macka B, Deborahe Glasgow, and Ranking Ann, while the *Black Liberation Dub* series marked a mid-1990s return to more organic, roots-driven textures.

Beyond reggae, Mad Professor earned global recognition as a sought-after remixer. His reimagining of Massive Attack’s *Protection* into *No Protection* (1995) stands as a landmark in dub and electronic fusion. Collaborations with notable artists including Sade, The Orb, Depeche Mode, and Jamiroquai further showcase his versatility. Today, Mad Professor continues to push boundaries, producing alongside his son Joe Ariwa and sustaining Ariwa’s legacy as a vital hub for innovative dub and electronic music.
