About Rubén Blades

Rubén Blades is a seminal figure in Latin music and a proud ambassador of Panamanian culture. Born into a middle-class family in Panama City, he was deeply influenced by his Cuban-born mother, a pianist and singer, and his father, a police detective who also played the bongo. Early on, Blades drew inspiration from doo-wop icons like Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, initially performing North American pop songs before fully embracing Spanish-language music amid Panama’s political unrest in the 1960s.

While studying law at the University of Panama, Blades balanced academics with performing in local bands such as Conjunto Latino. His breakthrough came after moving to New York, where he started at Fania Records’ mailroom before becoming the lead vocalist for Ray Barretto’s band. His collaboration with Willie Colón during the late 1970s produced the legendary album "Siembra" (1978), which features the timeless hit "Pedro Navaja"—the best-selling salsa single ever and a cornerstone of Latin music.

In 1982, Blades founded Los Seis del Solar, expanding his sound by blending salsa with rock, reggae, and Caribbean influences, as heard on albums like "Buscando América" (1983). Beyond music, he has enjoyed a dynamic career as an actor, appearing in TV series such as *Fear the Walking Dead*, and has been politically active—running for Panama’s presidency in 1994 and serving as Minister of Tourism from 2004 to 2009.

Blades’ artistry continues to earn acclaim, winning a Latin Grammy for "Cantares del Subdesarrollo" (2009) and a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album with "Tangos" (2015). Known for his socially conscious storytelling, Rubén Blades remains an enduring and influential force in Latin culture worldwide.
