About Mike D

Mike Diamond, popularly known as Mike D, grew up in Manhattan’s Upper West Side during New York City’s challenging fiscal crisis of the 1970s and early ’80s. As a curious and rebellious youth, he developed his musical palate by secretly collecting 7-inch vinyl records from his older brothers, amassing classic sounds from The Jackson Five, The Beatles, and legendary Motown artists. His passion for music ignited after purchasing Steve Miller’s *Fly Like An Eagle* with his own savings, which led him to learn the drums and embark on a creative journey. Mike D’s influences evolved as he embraced punk rock, discovered rap through underground mixtapes, and later absorbed reggae from pioneering bands such as The Clash and The Slits.

In the early 1980s, Mike D co-founded the iconic Beastie Boys alongside Adam Yauch and Adam Horovitz. Blending hardcore punk roots with burgeoning hip-hop culture, the trio crafted a groundbreaking sound that propelled them to multi-platinum success and earned multiple Grammy Awards. Their influence was further cemented with their 2012 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Beyond music, Mike D and his bandmates exercised full creative control over their work, collaborating with visionary directors like Spike Jonze and launching their Grand Royal record label in the 1990s.

Mike D’s talents extend beyond performing; he has ventured into design and curation, notably organizing Transmission LA: AV Club at MOCA, a multidisciplinary project featuring collaborations with cultural figures such as chef Roy Choi. In 2018, along with Horovitz, he co-authored *Beastie Boys Book*, a New York Times bestseller that inspired the 2020 Spike Jonze-directed documentary *Beastie Boys Story*. Today, Mike D stands not only as a pioneering musician but as a versatile creative force whose enduring legacy continues to inspire.
