About KOKIA

KOKIA, born Akiko Yoshida in 1976, is a celebrated Japanese singer-songwriter known for her soulful blend of J-pop infused with neoclassical and folk elements. Starting her musical journey at the tender age of three with violin lessons, she later mastered piano and refined her artistry through formal studies at the esteemed Toho Gakuen School of Music and additional training in the United States. Adopting the stage name KOKIA—an anagram of her birth name—she debuted in 1998 with "For Little Tail," a track featured in the video game Tail Concerto, quickly gaining attention for her emotive vocal style.

KOKIA's early career included significant collaborations, most notably with acclaimed composer Yoko Kanno on "Ai no Field," the theme for the anime *Brain Powerd*. While her debut album "Songbird" (1999) did not chart, subsequent releases steadily built her reputation. Her single "Kawaranai Koto (Since 1976)" reached the Oricon Top 50, and her album "Remember Me" (2003), along with its title track, became her highest-charting works. Though she never dominated mainstream charts, KOKIA developed a dedicated international following, especially in France, where she expanded her presence through performances, including at the MIDEM festival.

In 2006, asserting her creative independence, KOKIA founded the label Anco&co, enabling her to explore new collaborations and release projects like "Aigakikoeru" initially in Europe before Japan. Her wide-ranging discography—including albums such as "The Voice," "Fairy Dance" (2008), and the Tunisia-inspired "Real World" (2010)—showcases her ability to craft heartfelt melodies that resonate across cultures. With a career spanning over two decades, KOKIA remains a distinctive and influential figure in contemporary Japanese music.
